Peace & Civility

Artist Statement
The most challenging part of this project was finding a balance between what I wanted in terms of design versus what I felt was needed. There were many techniques I was eager to try but ultimately decided That it wouldn’t help drive the overall purpose of the Speak Your Peace campaign. I battled a lot with finding an effective way to pull people in and make them interested enough to want to learn more about the 9 principles of peace and civility. I settled on a typography-heavy design that was not only visual but informative. I was looking for a way to catch people’s attention at a time when they aren’t necessarily willing to stop. From a distance, it’s apparent that there is some sort of imagery on the poster. Only once you start to approach it do words become visible. With words come a message and messages provoke interest. By combining imagery and a message all into one, I am both drawing in a passerby while also provoking thought. The overall experience of any design is based on the curiosity of the viewer, so my main goal was to create interest from the very first glance. 

Vision Statement
We live in a world where we are more free and more outspoken than ever before. While this is a miraculous thing, it can also quickly turn sour. In our times of disagreement, it is important to remember civility and the act of treating people with kindness. A community can be so much more than a large group of people walking along the same streets. It’s about having respect, patience, sympathy, and so much more for your fellow beings. 
These nine principles remind us all how easy it is to practice simple kindness and civility towards others in the community. They also encourage civic participation and inspire people to better their communication skills as a whole. We do not aim to end disagreements, but rather end the hostility that comes with it.
